Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has been declared the winner of Thursday’s election, securing another five-year term and extending his rule to more than four decades. The electoral commission said Museveni won 72% of the vote, while opposition leader Bobi Wine received 25%.
Wine rejected the outcome, calling the results “fake” and alleging ballot stuffing. He has not provided evidence, and authorities have not responded to the claims. He urged Ugandans to stage non-violent protests.
The vote was marred by violence and heavy security measures. Wine says at least 21 people were killed in election-related incidents, while authorities have confirmed seven deaths. Internet access has been cut nationwide since Tuesday, a move criticised by the United Nations as “deeply worrying”.
